Explore New England: Southern Vermont Return to Map
Located in the Green Mountains, the Southern Vermont area is rich with trails for walking, hiking, camping and horseback riding. The summer and fall seasons offer great opportunities to take a drive and tour one of New England’s most beautiful destinations. We recommend the drive from West Dover to Wilmington, ending with a visit to The Wheeler Farm in Wilmington, described as the most photographed farms in Vermont. Cows grazing in front of a row of ancient maples can only be described as a photographers dream, especially in the fall. A maple syrup stand is close to the road. Enjoy angling on the world-famous Battenkill River, taking in a concert or a craft fair or mountain biking down the grassy slopes of Stratton Mountain after a thrilling gondola ride to the top or descending Bromley Mountain on an Alpine slide. Those years gone by are also in evidence in some striking examples of Vermont’s historical past - Robert Todd Lincoln’s restored summer estate, Hildene and the historic Equinox Hotel. In Manchester you will also find the finest designer factory stores in the US. Weston is a picturesque village with a village green, the famous Vermont Country Store, art galleries, museums and antique shops.
Woodstock is a quintessential New England village and was named one of the five most beautiful villages in America. You’ll notice there is “something different” when you drive past the antique shops, galleries and historic homes. They have buried the cables and wires which is fairly unusual for the USA! On the far side of the village green there is the last genuine covered bridge built in Vermont which leads to Mountain Avenue and its old summer cottages. From here you can follow a trail to the summit of Mount Tom and take a guided floral walk through the Rockerfeller Estate. In nearby Quechee there’s Quechee Gorge, Vermont’s “little Grand Canyon”. Also in the area are Billings Farm, a restored working dairy farm and Sugarbush Farm which has cheesemaking and maple syrup.
