Explore New England: Berkshires Return to Map
Leave the 21st century behind. Step into Old Sturbridge Village and find yourself transported back in time. Find New Englanders in period costume in historic households and restored craft shops, at water powered mills and on a working farm. See the past come alive in the everyday tasks and seasonal celebrations of early 19th century New England. Stroll around the 200 acre village and meet housewives on their errands, tinners at their workbench, and oxen lumbering up and down country lanes. Learn about spinning at the Widow Fenno’s. Bargain with a country shopkeeper. See sparks fly at the local blacksmiths or lend a hand with chores at a Village hearth. Old Sturbridge Village is truly a unique day out.
Few places can combine culture with beautiful countryside as well as the Berkshire hills in western Massachusetts. Here the Boston Symphony Orchestra delight thousands with their summer concert series at Tanglewood. In June and August the Williamstown Theatre Festival attracts the finest New York and Hollywood actors. The surrounding countryside provides a unique setting for hiking with a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The scenic beauty is outstanding year round but no more so than with the colours of the fall foliage. Stockbridge, a picturesque town, has retained its historic charm. The Norman Rockwell Museum lies on the outskirts of Stockbridge, which holds the largest collection of the artists insightful and comical paintings. The town also hosts the Berkshire Theatre Festival, which stages new and innovative plays from June to early September. Lenox is a gracious historic town and has kept its peaceful charm that made it a favorite summer retreat for wealthy American families post Industrial Revolution. It is easy to explore Lenox by foot. Its village center boasts many unique shops and galleries. Tanglewood is located 11/2 miles west of the town.
