|  | California's Napa and Sonoma Valleys are two of the most famous wine-growing regions in the world. Visiting some of the many wineries is the greatest attraction and is easy by car. The Napa Valley Wine Train is also a highly recommended experience. There's plenty else to do too including, visiting the towns of Napa and Sonoma, the COPIA cultural center dedicated to the celebration of wine, food and the arts, the Napa Valley Opera House and the Napa Valley Museum or simply enjoying some of California's great wines at one of the many fine restaurants in the region.
Sacramento is a great stop off between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe but is also an ideal gateway to the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Visit Marshall Gold State Park where gold was first discovered in 1848. Pan for gold yourself at Sutters Mill. Visit Old Sacramento with its amazing collection of Gold Rush-era buildings and the California State Railroad Museum. Tour the Capitol building and the see Arnold Schwarzenegger's office.
Lake Tahoe is 12 miles wide, 22 miles long and has 72 miles of shoreline, making it the largest alpine lake in North America. The sun shines 274 days a year and the water in the lake is 99.7 per cent clear! Listed among ‘the most beautiful drives in America’ the 72 mile drive along the shores of Lake Tahoe is a must. In the winter the Lake Tahoe region becomes the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America. It simply doesn't get any better than this!
